This is a provisional version of this text, dated 23 October 2026. It describes how Roadby works today, but our legal adviser has not reviewed it yet and some details are still to be completed. It may change: when it does, the date shown here changes too, and the reviewed version will replace this one.
Delete your Roadby account
You can delete your Roadby account, and the data that goes with it, whenever you want: yourself in the app, in a few seconds, or by asking us by email if you no longer have the app. You do not need to install the app again to ask us.
In the app
If Roadby is still on your phone and you can sign in:
- Open the Profile tab (the last one in the bar at the bottom) and tap the gear at the top right to open Settings.
- Tap Account, then “Delete account” at the bottom of the screen.
- Type your current password and tap “Delete forever”. If you only sign in with Google (your account has no password), we email you a 6-digit code instead: type it and tap “Delete forever”. The code works once, for 1 hour. If it does not arrive, check your spam folder or tap “Resend code”.
The account is deleted at once, and this cannot be undone. There is nothing to cancel beforehand: Roadby has no subscriptions or in-app purchases. If you have forgotten your password, you can reset it from the Log in screen (“Forgot password?”) or ask us by email, as explained below.
Without the app, by email
If you have uninstalled Roadby or cannot use it, write to us at support@roadby.app:
- Send the email from the address you use to sign in to Roadby, so that we can find your account.
- Write “Delete my Roadby account” in the subject line and, if you remember it, add your @username.
- Do not send us your password: we will never ask for it.
We aim to reply within 24 hours, to your account's email address, asking you to confirm; that is how we check that the request really comes from you. Once you confirm, we will delete the account within 7 days and let you know by email when it is done. What is deleted from our database is the same as when you delete it in the app (see below), and it cannot be undone either.
If you can no longer use that email address, write to us anyway from another one and include your @username. We will tell you what we need to check that the account is yours: we only delete an account when we are reasonably sure that the request comes from its owner.
What is deleted
When the account is deleted, all of the following is removed from our database at the same moment:
- Your account: email address, password (which was only ever stored as a hash), the Google sign-in details if you used Google, and the dates you signed up, confirmed your email and last signed in. Your email address also remains for a while in the access audit log described below.
- Your profile: display name, @username, bio and photo. The photo is then also deleted from our file storage.
- Your last position and your voice session, if there was one.
- Friend requests, friendships and blocks: the ones you made and the ones other people made involving you.
- Your shared-time history. Each entry is a single row shared by two people, so the other person also loses the time they spent with you.
- Your conversations and message data on our server, anything still waiting to be delivered, your message settings and the list of phones that collect your messages; on the phone where you delete the account, your messages too.
- Your membership of every group, and your data in them.
- Your badges, pins and counters, your confirmation that you are 18 or older, the version of the terms you accepted and any block on your account.
- Reports that other users filed about you.
- Your device notification tokens and the record of notifications sent.
- The internal record of friend requests you sent, the photo records and the record of your consent to news and offers emails.
What is kept, and for how long
- Reports you filed about other users are kept in anonymised form: they no longer show who filed them. They are deleted when the reported person's account is deleted. Any copy of messages attached to them is kept for at least 90 days after it was made, then until the report has been reviewed, and 12 months at most (only 90 days if the reported person deletes their account).
- Messages you sent stay on the phones of the people who received them, in chats and in groups: we cannot delete them from other people's phones. A group photo you set also stays: it belongs to the group.
- Your messages on a phone where you had already signed out before deleting the account, and the last Android backup that included them, until the next backup replaces it.
- Copies of messages attached to reports about you: up to 90 days after they were made.
- The random code of each of your phones, for 90 days, so that they delete your messages the next time they open.
- The access audit log of the authentication system (your account identifier and email address, the action, such as signing in or deleting the account, and the IP address) and database backups are kept for the periods set out under “How long we keep data” in the privacy policy.
- Settings stored on a phone (lobby mode and audio settings) belong to the device, not to the account. Deleting the account in the app resets them on that phone; they stay on any other phone where you had signed in, and on every phone if we delete the account for you by email. The Back up messages switch also belongs to each phone, and deleting the account does not change it: it stays as you left it until you change it or uninstall the app.
- The notification token that Expo and Google already hold for your phone: we do not ask them to delete it.
- If you asked us by email, your request and our replies are kept for 3 years after the deletion (or after our last reply, if the request is never confirmed), as a record that we handled it, and are then deleted.
- If we have closed an account under our child safety standards, we first save a copy of the information the authorities may need; that copy is kept outside the account until they no longer need it, even if the owner deletes the account, as explained on that page.
The newsletter of this website is a separate list, not linked to your account, so deleting the account does not remove you from it. To leave it, use the unsubscribe link in any newsletter email or write to us.
Deleting only part of your data
You do not have to delete your account to remove some things: in the app you can change your name, bio or photo under Edit profile, remove friends, cancel friend requests, unblock people, delete a chat (it is deleted for you; the other person keeps their copy), delete a message request, leave a group, choose who can message you, hide your badges (Show badges on my profile) and switch off “News and offers by email”. The app does not yet let you delete single entries from your history (each entry is shared, so deleting one also removes it from the other person's history), or remove your profile photo without replacing it. If you want either of those removed without deleting your account, write to us at support@roadby.app and we will do it for you.
